UniSlam_Day_01 21.jpg

Toby is an experienced workshop facilitator, delivering writing workshops and courses for all abilities. His work is based on the pedagogy that poetry has the ability to empower, no matter what background or level of experience participants have.

Courses/workshops.

Toby devises and delivers tailored writing courses of varying length for all abilities.

Examples of these include the Roundhouse Outreach Programme, delivering poetry and performance workshops to young people in Hull through the Roundhouse, and Writers House, facilitating workshops to a group of emerging writers in Peterborough through arts organisation, Metal. Each year Toby curates the line-up and workshop programme from the UniSlam Festival and National Youth Poetry Showcase.

He also works with organisations, companies and individuals to create and deliver tailored one-off workshops.

Toby has worked with many companies to deliver masterclasses and workshops on CPD events and away days.

Examples include a poetry workshop for employees at the Financial Times addressing mental health and promoting wellbeing, a masterclass on poetry writing including group performances for law firm Taylor Wessing and CPD sessions for teachers across London on how to engage young people with poetry through the Diana Trust

Toby offers mentoring to individuals and groups looking to work on editing, writing technique and creative development.

“The session was fun and interactive making the students work hard and have a good time whilst also understanding and emphasising good points about writing an interesting poem... many students gained a lot from the experience and it will enable them to increase their levels at the next assessment.”

Rebecca Dickson, Key Stage 3 English Leader,

St Bartholomew’s School

“I thought workshop was really imaginative, fun and different.

I thought that he was really passionate and enthusiastic about poetry which drew the attention of most students and got everyone involved.”
